Visual Field Examinations

Up to 30 Minutes Consultation: € 25

What is a Visual Field Exam ?

A Visual Field Examination is used for testing the full horizontal and vertical range of what you are able to see peripherally. This range is commonly referred to as "side vision."

The exam is performed monocularly ( one eye at a time ) and a series of bright lights are presented to patient in a random order while the patient maintains fixation on a specific target in the straight ahead position.

The patient clicks a button to confirm they have seen the targets. A printout of the exam , generally in grey scale format , will give a clear appraisal of the quality of the visual field.  The presence of any  blind spots (scotomas), which could indicate eye diseases is immediately apparent.

There are different types of Visual Field Examinations. Some are a basic screen , lasting  a few minutes per eye . Others  may be more detailed  , as they try to determine the exact  extent of visual field defect caused by such conditions as Glaucoma

We cater the Visual Field Exam to investigate your symptoms, taking into account all the other findings of a Comprehensive Eye Exam

Under what circumstances could I loose peripheral vision ?

Basic causes of peripheral vision loss include:

  • Glaucoma
  • Drooping Eye Lids ( Ptosis )
  • Retinal Eye Disease
  • Retinal Detachment
  • Retinitis Pigmentosa
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Brain damage from stroke, disease or injury
  • Neurological damage such as from ( Optic Neuritis )
  • Compressed optic nerve head ( Papilledema )
  • Concussions ( Head Injuries)
  • Brain Tumour

What about headaches ?

If you have an on-going issue with headaches , your GP may recommend you have a Visual Field Exam to rule out any visual loss that could be associated with anything from an uncorrected refractive error ( ie. the need for glasses ) or a more serious underlying condition eg. Pituitary Tumour.

At Rods & Cones  will take the time to perform a thorough Visual Field Examination.

We are happy to:

  • Discuss and explain the findings with you.
  • Save the results with our computerised software for future comparison reasons.
  • Monitor your visual field over a series of appointments if required, at no extra charge.
  • Refer you to a specialist ophthalmologist without delay, if the need arises.
